GWANDU
ALH. USMAN BUHARI ALI GWANDU

Alh. Usman Buhari Ali Gwandu was
born on the 16th of October. His father is Alh. Muhammad Buhari Ali (son of
late Alh. Ali Majidadin Gwandu of Ilellah Area, Gwandu Marafa Ward), formerly
of Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation and that of late Haj. Halimatu
Muhammad Shayau (daughter of late Alh. Muhammad Shayau of Shiyar Fada Area,
Birnin Kebbi). He bears the prestigious traditional title of The First Shettima
of Garin Gwandu bestowed on him by Alh. Bello Haruna Rasheed, the Sarkin Gabas
of Gwandu. Shettima is a traditional title which originated from the Borno
Empire and it is bestowed only to people with great heart and outstanding
scholars.
His highest educational
qualification obtained is a Masters Degree in Agricultural Economics from
Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and presently pursuing his Doctorate Degree
(Ph.D) on Community & Economic Development at The Pennsylvania University,
United States of America. The Shettima also possess numerous political values
and potentials. He is an inspiring mentor and charismatic youth leader whom our
populous youth look up to, for sense of direction.
His personal expertise cut across
numerous fields of youth empowerment and community development, including Adolescent
& Youth Reproductive Health; Advocacy, Capacity Building & Research;
Agricultural Project Appraisal; Community Development & Empowerment;
Community & Social Appraisal/Research; Enterprise/Organizational Start-up
& Development; Family & Health Counselling; Information &
Communication Technology; Project Management, Proposal Development, Youth &
Women Empowerment.
He has received numerous awards all related to youth & community development, and also traditional titles from some communities, including Sardaunan Yelwa (Bauchi State), Sardaunan Yarima Jalo (Tudun Wadan Gombe) and of recent, The Shettima of Garin Gwandu by Sarkin Gabas of Gwandu under the Gwandu Emirate Council. Other awards he received include that given by the Gombe State Government in 2007 (as the State Best National Youth Service Corps Member) and subsequently the highest and prestigious Youth award in the country by the Nigerian President, Late Alh. Umaru Musa Yar’adua (Mutawallen Katsina) in 2007 as an Outstanding National Youth Service Corps Member. He also received a Merit Award in 2012 by the Nigerian Minister of Finance as a Panellist under the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWiN) Programme.
To date, he serve as a
Consultant, Specialist, Board Secretary, Board member, Member, Proprietor,
Patron and Director to numerous Non-Government Organizations and Private
entities, both locally and internationally, including the United Nations
Children Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT),
Bright Capacity Initiatives for Community Enhancement (BCiCe Nigeria), among
others.
Shettima has also attended over
50 trainings, workshops, conferences, and summits locally and internationally.
He has also successfully participated in various capacities including Team
Member, Project Director and Project Advisor in conducting over 90 donor funded
projects & structured activities on community development, trainings,
consultancy activities & services which worth millions of naira. He has
also published and completed over 10 research works and a number of articles in
dailies and magazines.
Furthermore, the Great Shettima
has also been engaged in academic line, teaching both undergraduate and
postgraduate courses in recognized academic institutions and professional
bodies, including Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto and Institute of Strategic
Management, Nigeria.
Sardauna also held, and still
hold lots of responsibilities and leadership roles in numerous capacities in
all stages of personal and educational pursuit, including the President of
Student Union bodies and associations. As such, he is presently the Kebbi State
and North West Zonal President of the Association of non-Bank Microfinance
Institutions of Nigeria (ANMFIN).
Shettima is a Chartered Project
Manager, Chartered Economist and an International Volunteer who presently hold
different category of membership with over 10 professional bodies and
associations, some of which are the Institute of Strategic Management Nigeria,
Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria, International Academy of
Management, Institute of Chartered Project Managers, and International Forum
for Volunteering in Development, among others.
He was able to start up a
youth-led, rural based (grassroots), gender sensitive, non-partisan,
non-profit, and non-governmental organization in September 2006 Nigeria with 4
volunteers and a State level registration. As of now, the organization has been
able to scale up its presence in 13 Local Government Areas across 4 States of
Nigeria, including Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna and Taraba States.
Furthermore, the organization have obtained a National registration since 2011
and presently have a total number of 45 staff, a total number 32 young people
have also successfully carried out their compulsory Industrial Training
attachment and 12 young people have also successfully conducted their mandatory
National Youth Service Corps Scheme in the organization. Focus of the
organization still remains supporting Community Development & Empowerment
Initiatives, Community and Reproductive Health-Care Services, and also
Vulnerable Children Development. The organization presently maintains its own
buildings and lots of equipments across the States they operate, the
organization also operates and manages 10 Centres and provides over 40
different services and facilities to the underserved and unserved populations,
mostly in rural communities. Under his management, the organization has
successfully implemented 16 youth focused projects and 44 structured activities
which cuts across various development fields, including health, enterprise
development, agriculture, and community empowerment among others. The
organization is a member of 13 coalitions and networks, while it affiliates
with 43 private, public and non-governmental entities.
The Sardauna have always nurtured the practice of supporting and inspiring young people in all facets of life through skills and knowledge update, especially through peer reviews and discussions.
During the flag-off of one of his recent projects in Kebbi State, He once mentioned that “interacting with Youth as a mentor also strengthens my competency. I have high interest in such interaction as I believe that through such process we will be able to understand more of our strengths identify our weaknesses and also collectively find ways of overcoming them. Youths are too precious to be ignored, they can change the world, because they are the future”.
Shettima of Garin Gwandu is married. His hobbies include driving, visitations and travelling, as such, he has travelled to lots of African and European countries. His favourite games are badminton and volleyball.
